Thoughts on the Patreon Paywall
Lately, I have been reading comments from people that are of the opinion that exclusive Patreon content is a bad way to go. While I agree that it's counter productive to hide all of your art behind a pay-wall, I'd like to take a moment and go over the reasons why I believe that some exclusive content can actually be the catalyst for even more free content for everyone.
The main argument goes something like this:
"Artists should earn a living through commission work, and use Patreon only as a place for people to give donations, if they choose, allowing all work to be shared publicly, at no cost to the viewer."
While I agree that this method is idealistically sound, it has some serious flaws when it comes to practical application. I think that once we look into it a bit further, we will see that every viable option available to the artist exists with a pay-wall of some sort.
